At Crash of Rhinos Painting, we specialize in exterior home painting for stucco homes here in the Phoenix metro area. Completely exposed to the elements, your home’s stucco exterior can take a beating over the years. That’s why an essential part of our prep work involves stucco repair and stem wall scraping.

In this blog post, we’ll run through just some of the reasons that stucco repair is the most important part of our prep work, and what this does for your home. It’s just one of the reasons that Crash of Rhinos is one of the most trusted exterior painting businesses in Phoenix.

Why does stucco repair matter so much?

Stucco is one of the preferred materials for building homes here in the Valley, mainly because our arid climate and low-clay soil negates some of its downsides—mainly, that stucco doesn’t do well with shifting earth beneath it. It’s durable and matches the look of many neighborhoods.

Yet, stucco is not impenetrable. Here are some of the reasons Crash of Rhinos repairs your stucco before painting it:

1. Your stucco home is under attack—constantly

This may sound melodramatic, but it’s true: your stucco is constantly being bombarded by the sun, wind, rain, and other natural elements. Our Phoenix climate can be tough on just about everything, and that goes double for the exterior of your home. Even woodpeckers take shots at it. Finally, as your home settles over time, cracks can appear in stucco.

In addition to making your home look unappealing, such damage to stucco can eventually lead to the failure of the stucco exterior. But, for our purposes, there’s something else: painting over damaged stucco is not going to turn out right. Let’s explain why.

2. Stucco in good condition ensures a smooth finish

Our job is to leave you with a stunning exterior painting job. To do so, we need to smooth over and repair any hairline fractures, holes, or other damage to the stucco walls we’ll be painting.

Think about it: if you were painting the walls of your living room, not fixing damage to the walls first would result in weird splotching and shadows. It’d look terrible. Same goes for your home’s exterior. Any exterior painting company that doesn’t do stucco repair first is asking for trouble.

Of course, that’s just one of the things we do for prep work. But, given that stucco is the canvas we work with, you could argue that it’s one of the most essential things we do.

3. Better stucco = longer-lasting exterior paint

A poor canvas makes for a poor painting. But, failure to properly prepare a home’s stucco exterior prior to painting can have another consequence: it could lead to the paint wearing faster or peeling, meaning that you’d need another painting sooner than you should.

Under Arizona state law, exterior home painters are required to offer homeowners a two-year warranty on their work. In our view, that’s not long enough. We place a seven-year warranty on the homes we paint.

Part of the reason? We’re confident in our prep work, painting process, and the high-quality paint we use. We do things right so that your home is painted to last.

4. Improves your home’s value on the market

A lot of the homeowners we work with have us repaint their homes specifically because they’re thinking about putting them on the market, either immediately or in the near future. It’s a good call: exterior home painting can drastically increase the curb appeal and value of your home.

Here in Phoenix, effective stucco repair is more than an essential part of the painting process. It’s another great selling point for your home. It puts the buyer’s mind at ease to know that there are no issues with the exterior of the home, and conveys that your home has been well-cared for.
